چکیده

Experiments have been designed to investigate hormonal effects on the human prostatic carcinoma cell line LNCaP in the presence of complete foetal calf serum. At physiological concentrations (3.3 x 10M), several derivatives of 17a-methyl-testosterone led to a significant reduction of cell proliferation, inhibition of colony formation in soft agar, change of morphology, induction of a prostate specific mRNA and downregulation of c-myc RNA. Two different antiandrogens, hydroxyflutamide and cyproterone acetate, were capable of reversing the effects exerted by the synthetic androgens on growth properties. The proliferation rate of control cells devoid of androgen receptor was not inhibited by synthetic androgens. Our results indicate that the cellular androgen response mechanism of LNCaP cells is intact and that synthetic androgens elicit androgen receptor mediated suppression of the transformed phenotype. Rare cases of remission of prostatic cancer on androgen treatment have been reported. LNCaP cells may be a model of an uncommon class of prostatic cancer which responds favourably to androgen treatment.

Transgenic plants in phytoremediation: recent advances and new possibilities.

Phytoremediation, the use of plants and their associated microbes to remedy contaminated soils, sediments, and groundwater, is emerging as a cost-effective and environmentally friendly technology. Due in large part to its aesthetic appeal, this technology has gained increasing attention over the past 10 years. Phytoremediation uses different plant processes and mechanisms normally involved in t...

Role of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal (AM) Fungi in Phytoremediation of Soils Contaminated: A Review

Pollution of the soil environment with toxic materials from fossil burning, mining and smelting of metalliferous ores, disposal of sewage, fertilizers and pesticides, etc. has increased dramatically since the onset of industrial revolution. Application of plants with ability of absorbing heavy metals is a low-cost alternative for eliminating soils from heavy metals. Phytoremediation uses plants...

Chemical and biological parameters as tools to evaluate and improve heavy metal phytoremediation.

In this review, chemical and biological parameters are discussed that strongly influence the speciation of heavy metals, their availability to biological systems and, consequently, the possibilities to use bioremediation as a cleanup tool for heavy metal polluted sites. In order to assess heavy metal availability, a need exists for rapid, cost-effective systems that reliably predict this parame...

Effect of nonpathogenic Fusarium strains on the uptake rate of radionuclides by tomato

Radionuclides released into the environment enter the food chain through plants and fish among others, and pose a potential risk to human health. Eliminating radionuclides from the soil environment or reducing their uptake by food crops would decrease the dose for humans. The possibility of phytoremediation was suggested to reduce the amount of radionuclides in the soil. The transfer rate of ra...
